Twenty 422 class diesel locos were built in 1969/70 by Clyde Engineering for the NSW Railways. Powered by 16 cylinder EMD 645E diesel engines, these boxy mainliners were the first EMD engined locos in NSW to not feature a streamlined 'bulldog' nose. Of the original twenty units, some have been scrapped, but others have been re-built and still run today. Whilst some 422 locos remain in service, 42211 was withdrawn in 2015 and exported to South Africa.
