In 1962, a new standard gauge line was opened between here and Melbourne in parallel with the VR broad gauge line. For the first time, passengers and goods could travel Sydney to Melbourne without changing trains. Nevertheless, locos and crews were still exchanged here, and the VR still ran broad gauge trains from Melbourne to serve Victorian stations and Albury. In 2008, the Broad gauge line was closed for conversion to standard gauge, and in 2010 it re-opened as double track standard gauge.
