As of Wed 2am, #JTWC has classified #Typhoon #Gaemi as a #SuperTyphoon, with winds up to 120kts/138mph/222kph, and gusts up to 145kts/167mph/269kph.
• Those are 1-min average wind speeds though. CMA uses "milder" (still hazardous) 10-min averages of 82kts/100mph/162kph, and gusts at 107kts/123mph/198kph.
• It is on track to slam #Taiwan by Wed night with very intense wind and rain for the next two days.
• Schools and businesses are closed for all of Taiwan today except for Kinmen.
Forecast map of Super Typhoon Gaemi issued by the Joint Typhoon Warning Center on July 23, 2024 at 2100 UTC. The system is centered some 330km E of Kaohsiung, Taiwan. It is forecast to make landfall near Yilan, Taiwan by Wednesday evening. Gale force winds will cover all of Taiwan. It is expected to make a second landfall by late Thursday in Fujian, China. Current wind speeds at 120kts/138mph/222kph, with gusts up to 145kts/167mph/267kph. Expected peak wind speeds at 130kts/150mph/241kph with gusts up to 160kts/184mph/296kph.
