My retired parents got winter fuel allowance - on top of two final salary public sector pensions.
He'd pay the bills. She'd turn up the thermostat. Then, just to annoy him some more, would open the french windows to cool the living room down.
Last winter, in the face of gas-hikes & profiteering, my wife & i heated one room only of our Edwardian terraced (the kitchen) & wore extra clothing. It's fine. Really.
