Whilst Katunga station was closed to passengers a few years before, when this photo was taken, passenger trains still ran through here to and from Cobram. Cobram passenger trains were withdrawn in 1993, but this line remains open today for goods trains to Tocumwal.
All GY wagons have now been withdrawn. Rail does still haul significant bulk grain in Victoria, but modern grain trains use larger bogie hopper wagons that enable more grain to be carried per train and also greatly ease unloading.
