… by not making communication of that “system image” a core, well understood subject in source code design, we’ve created a world of cargo-cult source design that fails more often than not.
It’s pretty much a standing joke that new developers approaching an existing code base will always have the urge to rewrite some crucial chunk of it. Experience tells me that this is because it’s unfamiliar and they struggle to grasp the thinking that created it.
We are failing to design to communicate.
