6-x With the collapse of the USSR most of this mapmaking came to a screeching stop.
While some cartographers are surely still at work; the global data gathering, organizing, analyzing, printing, storage & distribution just dwindled away.
Today everyone can buy those once secret maps.
When I bought my first one in the 1990s I was gobsmacked: it had full 1:10.000 details of the Dutch "Den Helder" naval- & "Leeuwarden" air force base. Neither which I had ever before seen on maps.
