The question of Biden dropping out seems to ignite democrats' status quo bias. It seems the status quo bias is quite strong in all sorts of areas. Look no further than the original response to the Covid pandemic. Or the response to learning that tobacco caused cancer in the 1950's.
As an alternative, people could be positioned to have their worlds turned upside down at a moment's notice: "Ope, I guess we're in a pandemic now where we isolate and wear masks."
