Visited Tachibana Shogo at U. Tokyo with my outreach intern and we were given a peak at the lab where Ryugu asteroid grains are being studied! One photo shows a chip of Ryugu (OK, I've seen grains before, but isn't every one special?) and the other shows a heat chamber where it'll be made to talk 😐
The grain is being kept in a FFTC (Facility-to-Facility Transfer Container) that are used to move the samples from JAXA. The chamber it is in is less than 1% oxygen to avoid contamination!
A metal cylinder sits in the middle of a very low-oxygen rectangular chamber, in the centre of which is a tiny grain.
