She continued to serve as a passenger locomotive across the UK until withdrawn by the BR in 1963.
The loco was then purchased privately, restored to LNER condition and used to haul historic trains around the UK. In 1969 she was sent to the USA as part of a campaign to promote British exports, then ran widely across the USA and Canada until 1972 before returning to the UK in 1973. Under new ownership, 4472 was restored in 1973 and again in 1977 allowing her to continue operation in the UK.
