When the LNER's flagship Flying Scotsman express from London to Edinburgh commenced in 1928, this locomotive and four others were modified to operate at sustained high speeds. Only this individual locomotive however was named after the prestigious train. She was the first locomotive to be officially authenticated as travelling at a speed exceeding 100mph.
4472 remained in service with the LNER through WW2 and into British Rail ownership after nationalisation of Britain's railways in 1948.
