A total of forty of the 45 class were built with the last arriving in 1964. Whilst they were successful, the subsequent order from Goodwin was for an additional forty 44 class (in 1965-1967) instead of more 45 class. I'm not aware of the reasons for reverting to the older 44 class design.
In 1984 the 45s were banned as leading units for safety reasons. Nonetheless these locos continued to play a significant role usually 'in the shafts' on freight trains (and occasionally passenger trains too)
