I assume, most #nonBinary people would be okay with the compromise of you replacing your "he" or "he or she" with "he or she or they" instead of their proposed simply "they" when adressing an unspecified person or unspecified group of people, although they might roll their eyes of your introduced redundancy because you (surprise!) didn't feel included by "them", even though you probably have even used it in that context before without noticing
