Many scientists use statistics to quantify how much Signal we’re getting compared to Noise. (We do love having “hard numbers” on things.). If the Noise is random, we can usually use some statistical distribution to represent the level of random information being transmitted, and then we compare that to the Signal - useful information transmitted. Is the Signal roughly equivalent to the Noise? “Are you sure your eyes aren’t playing tricks on you?”
