As if JD Vance couldn't get worse in my book, The Economist wrote this smug fluff mining an earlier Vance lovefest Politico article. Any analogy of de Gaulle is historically superficial, not just 'imperfect' as Ian Ward concedes in his gushing article. With rhetoric of isolation division and fear; hopeless decline to manage; and disrespect for democratic institutions, his idea of the US has more to do with Putin's of 2000-era Russia than de Gaulle and post WW2 France.
