There were numerous subtypes of these with some having first or economy class seating (or both), some having a buffet and some including luggage storage space, and the configurations of many cars was changed over their decades of service. Cars were semi-permanently coupled into 3 or 4 car sets with a driving power car at each end and one or two trailer cars in between. Longer trains were formed by coupling two sets together, and they could be split and joined en-route.
