GY wagons were ubiquitous on Victorian rail tracks. With 6,320 built between 1939 and 1958, they were Australia's second most numerous item of railway rolling stock behind only NSWGR's fleet of over 10,000 S trucks. These versatile broad gauge 4-wheel wagons carried bulk grain, fertilizer, coal briquettes and even farm machinery or shipping containers. As can just be seen here, they were painted in their distinctive yellow colour and fitted with tarpaulins that gave them a distinctive profile.
