Today's historic of the day: Exactly 38 years ago today, just after closure and just as demolition had commenced, we see the platform of the Interstate standard gauge station at South Brisbane, Qld, August 1 1986.

South Brisbane was the terminus of interstate passenger from the opening of the standard gauge line in 1930 until June 21 1986 when the standard gauge was extended over the Brisbane River and the daily Brisbane Limited from Sydney, was extended to Roma Street station.

A view of a disused passenger railway platform taken from the passenger entrance gate. Looking along the platform to our right, the wall of the station building is on the right, and the wide and completely deserted platform is to the left with the side nearest the building in shadow beneath the awning and the left part in bright sunlight. All the tracks have been lifted and the land beyond the platform has been cleared. A stone block has been placed on the platform edge, presumably an early part of the demolition process. In the distance, beyond the former railway land, stands a structure made of fabric sails.
