Today in "somebody in a Japanese office actually did this:"
A preprinted return envelope I received had, like most preprinted mail, a barcode on it to make it easier for the post office to sort and deliver.
Someone had run a highlighter marker across this barcode.
Why? Is there some sort of cargo-cult belief that that will make it easier for a barcode reader -- most likely a monochrome barcode reader -- to see?
Someone had to go through a stack of envelopes and highlight every one like this.
