As at today, gas and wind are virtually level pegging over the year for electricity generation. Add solar and renewables have already overtaken fossil fuels.
Stacked bar chart of generation by source since 2012. The rapid decline of coal is evident, along with the rapid growth of renewables. The demise of fossil fuels has been helped by a significant fall in annual demand from around 320TWh in 2012 to 250TWh in 2023. This year’s total is heading for a similar level and this is even with 1.2 million EVs on the roads.
