While everyone waits for the last coal fired generators to switch off today it’s interesting to look at the decline of gas fired generation. Gas has already peaked and is in quite rapid decline. Based on figures at the end of September and the volumes for Oct-Dec 2023, gas is likely to contribute about 69 Terawatt hours of power in 2024. It will soon be less than half the volume burnt in 2016. As gas is the main source of CO2 in electricity generation, watching its decline is fascinating.
