About 10 years ago I took an armload of sunflowers to a dinner party on a farm near ours. The hostess, an accomplished but very local French woman, was completely flummoxed. I might as well have brought her an armload of soybeans or corn. She asked if I meant for her to use them for oil... When I suggested she put them in a vase on the table she looked downright horrified. Years later she came up to me and said, I saw some for sale today in a florist! So it wasn't just some crazy American thing.
