Mining booms are absolute horror stories
"One study found a connection between the 2006 oil boom in the Bakken region of Montana and North Dakota, and attacks against Native Americans there. The rate of violent victimization, which includes rape, assault and robbery increased 23 percent among Native people in the six years after the boom started. But in the surrounding counties that didn't produce oil, such violence decreased by 11 percent."
