Dirty yellow journalism has real historic consequences. "Remember the Maine!" started a full-scale war under false pretenses.

An idealized lithograph of the battleship Maine exploding in Havana Harbor in 1898, killing hundreds of US soldiers. The sensationalist American "yellow press" and a biased investigation blamed a Spanish mine, and the public sentiment whipped up by the headlines helped to launch the Spanish-American War. But nearly a century later more thorough and balanced research cast the blame on ship design, which is what reasonable military experts also claimed at the time. The lithograph here pictured shows interesting artistic treatment of motion (recalling perhaps Whistler's fireworks) on the eve of futurism.
