In the dunes in Skagen, a small fishing and seaside town on the literal tip of Jylland, mainland Denmark. It’s famous for its beautiful light. It is sunset, mid-summer, the White Nights when the sun barely dips below the horizon so it remains light all night. The sky is pale blue, cloudless except for a slim line of sunset-pink clouds at the bottom, as if bordering the horizon. Ahead, rolling dunes and marsh grass glow with green and gold colours. By contrast, the foreground is in shadow. Beyond, calm blue sea. In front of us, a narrow gravel path leading up a slight incline to Vippefyret. The ‘tipping lantern’. It’s an exact reproduction of the original that was erected in 1627. It's an almost dramatic black wooden structure that rises about 10 metres high, like a tripod. A long boom juts out with a big metal bucket dangling on the end of it. Fire in the bucket served as a navigational point for sea vessels.
