The Vikings who help us cross the road make me smile. But something I couldn’t pinpoint has been nagging at me. I fell across a photo I took when they first appeared in 2019 and know what it is. They were jauntier then. They swung their shields. I'm now amused by the fact that someone thought they were too happy-go-lucky and replaced them with jaded ones who seem to be thinking: “Here I am, all-conquering warrior, brain the size of a planet, and they ask me to help you cross the road.”

2019. Aarhus city centre, the roof of the library and white cloudy sky showing behind, looking up at the city’s first Viking pedestrian traffic light. It is showing the green ‘Walk’ figure. Photo taken shortly after they were installed by Aarhus council. The 2019 Viking is sort of cartoonishly stumpy, in a cheery way. Their eyes show below their helmet. No horns, of course. They are at a jaunty, cocked angle. They’ve no mouth, but somehow still seem to be smiling. They’re swinging their battleaxe ahead and swinging their shield behind as if skipping happily across the road.

2024. Aarhus city centre, the roof of the library and blue sunny sky showing behind, looking up at the same Viking pedestrian traffic light as in the 2019 photo in this toot. The green ‘Walk’ figure is showing. Unlike the cheery 2019 Viking, the 2024 Viking looks deadly serious. They’re walking carefully erect and upright, battleaxe held in front of them, shield protectively close to their body. They have no eyes. Or mouth. They look expressionlessly cross and jaded, tired of this job.
