All hail the unseen unsung council staff who sit in dull meetings in dull meeting rooms and come up with clever ways to make everyone's day better. Like these railings at traffic lights where cyclists can rest their arm and foot. I hope they become more widespread.

Hellerup, a Copenhagen suburb. A crossroads with a mossy path and grass verge and wooden fence just to the right. The traffic light is just turning from red to orange. We are stopped, waiting for green, on the puddle-covered black tarmac cycleway. To our right, a railing for cyclists to rest their arm and foot while waiting for the lights to change. A way to keep your feet dry too, in rain and snow. It has a thin upper bar at elbow height, to rest your arm, and a thick lower bar, angled at pedal-height, to rest your foot. A logo on the foot-bar says ‘Super cykelstier. Til hverdagens cykelhelte.’ ‘Super cycleways – for everyday biking heroes’. A bit un-Danishly hyperbolic, if you ask me, but I’ll let it go this time, because it’s an excellent design that deserves to be hyped.

Seen from a different angle, now with a fancy white house and a passing yellow bus in the background: the special railing by traffic lights that is designed so cyclists can stay upright on their bike, ready to go, while resting their arm and foot while waiting for the lights to change to green. Fuller description in the other photo in this toot.
