And following on from Critters in the Box (see earlier post), here are three gorgeous moths that paid a visit last night:

1) & 2) Peach Blossom

3) Buff Ermine

4) Common Wave

Overhead shot of 2cm arrowhead shaped moth on a finger. It is predominately brown but with 10 large mainly circular stigmata on its wing, eight of which, if you imagine closely, form a kind of surprised look face. Two are either side of its head, pink-brown and edged in white, resembling eyes wide open and raised eyebrows. Then mid-wing, right down the centre line, two more oblong shaped stigmata, pink-brown and edged in white, resembling a nose. Then at the very bottom wing edge on the centre line, two more pink-brown blotches edged in white resembling an open, surprised mouth. Four more very pale circular stigmata occupy the wing corners and outer wing edge, two on each side.

Side on shot of Peach Blossom moth on a finger. It faces right. It has a pinkish-brown furry head which is layered or ruffled. The wing is brown with two quite large pale circular stigmata on the outer wing edge, nestled in the rear corner. Across its back, down the middle are more circular stigmata which are pinky-brown and edged in white. Its wing edge at the back is fringed.

A 2cm, creamy, pale custard yellow moth on a finger. It faces right. It has a very furry head. tents its wings in a downward position. On the apex of the tent shape, where its wings come together down the central abdominal line, starting halfway down this central line, a series of black rectangles traverse the wing head towards the bottom left hand wing corner. The rectangles start larger and become smaller and more spaced out as they reach the wing corner, bottom left. There are a couple of small black marks dotted randomly elsewhere on the wing

Overhead shot of a flat butterfly-like moth on concrete. It is ghostly white, almost transparent. Its forewings are spread open, revealing its hindwings of the same colour. There are three thin greenish wavy lines that start on the top leading edge of the forewing and run to the opposite forewing edge, in a shallow arc, running perfectly across the visible underneath hindwings, like matching the lines on sheets of wallpaper.
