Franz Kline. Lehighton, 1946.
Way before he was the Franz Kline we recognize today, he was commissioned to paint a mural of his high-school hometown. It is often said that his later abstract motifs derive from his adolescence in this stark industrial place. Do you see that? It's obviously a back-reading but can still be true.
A large mural of a Pennsylvania mining town in the early 20th century, so sprawling and dense as a human-dominated landscape of tiny vignettes that it somewhat resembles a 17th c. Flemish painting.
