van Gogh. Sunflowers,1888-9.
It will will surprise no one that my favorite version of his sunflowers is the one with the brightest blue-green background. But what color is it, exactly - or was it? As you can see from these two versions of the same painting, there's a reason you must see art in person. Not only does the luminosity of a screen change the colors and size, but paint fades over time. To me the personal encounter of art in real space is sacred. The rest is just making do.
A brightened (some might claim more faithful to van Gogh's original work) version of sunflowers in a vase.
A duller (though likely more accurate to the current reality of the work on the wall) version of the same painting of sunflowers in a vase.
