One of the biggest mistakes, in my view as a Brummie, in UK public policy was the idiotic decision to call HS2 High *Speed* 2.
The issue is not speed but capacity. But that gets lost in the discussion about high speed. (And zany inevitable jokes about time to get to/from Brum.)
Taking environmental issues seriously means we need more trains and fewer cars and lorries; but you cannot have trains without tracks.
I realise my position on this will irk some of you; but my gods this irks me.
