“For the last 150 years or so, we’ve had this fantasy in Western development that we can control water. In many of the ways our dominant culture has tried to control water, we’ve actually erased its slow phases. So, that would be wetlands, high altitude forests and grasslands that generate a lot of rain and rivers. By preventing water from interacting with the land, as it does in its slow phases, we’ve caused a lot of problems for ourselves.”
