We are in an almost hidden corner of the public gardens on top of Salling department store on the main shopping street in Aarhus, 30 metres above the city. In front of us, a sculpture by Jeppe Hein called ‘The sky, the earth and you.’ It is framed below by lush green grasses and bushes in shadow; to the left and right by wooden fences and trees; and above by the underside of two wooden walkways. Behind it, a tall thin tree with thin branches dotted sparsely with small leaves. Above, a slice of clear bright cold-blue sky. The sculpture comprises three nested circular mirrors that tilt in different directions, reflecting fragments of the surroundings. The effect is rather magical, I think. From this angle, the top of the largest mirrored ring reflects the thin tree and the sky in a way that makes it look as if the reflection is an actual part of the tree. The sky and trees and bushes and shadows and light blend in the rings to make a whole new landscape.
