Domenico Beccafumi. The Story of Papirius, ~1525.
Typical of Siena and especially this artist, the scene is dreamy, distorted, not entirely sensical, even hallucinatory. (You see him referenced often in DalĂ later.) The title and the narrative are disconcerting, but what interests me most in Beccafumi is his resistance to Mannerism. He was born to peasants and even though he became educated, he continued to do his own bucolic thing, including medieval survivals and dark shadows.
A wide Renaissance-era landscape painting featuring many ruins and architectural elements and telling a narrative in vignettes, but the style is bucolic and idiosyncratic compared to his Mannerist contemporaries
