A book I'm editing this week is reminding me of the first time I learned one of the most surprising lessons about the corporate world -- that it's actually the COO of a corporation who runs that corporation, not the CEO. The CEO's one and only job is to know a bunch of rich people, and convince those rich people to give the corporation money. That's why most CEOs are obscenely wealthy, because these are the only people who are friends with other obscenely wealthy people.
