I've yet to understand all the reasons behind our elongated childhood. If I could guess, I'd say it has a lot to do with the demise of the external pressures of growing up. Like economic realities of building a home and putting food on the table for the entire family. Also the peer pressure seem to be weaker now as our peers are mostly like us, spending their days in an infantile bliss. We also seem to care more about their opinions and much less about the opinions of other parts of the society.
