First off, I don't want to rely on a JavaScript solution. I think cookies can work even without JS? I have to read up on that more, although it would be cool if I didn't need to use cookies at all.
PHP seems to have user session management. Trouble is I'm not developing at the PHP layer, I'm using a CMS built on top of that. I'd probably need to build a CMS plugin to make that work, which is a pain.
Something that *might* work would be an ID string as a URL parameter...
