What you can clearly see is the difference in where the lighting falls.
At lower opacities, the light on the right leg is essentially direct, with the left leg not shading it much at all. Whereas at opacity 1, it is shadowed like an ordinary object.
BUT it is still extremely bright. Enormously bright either way.
