"Mending Madeline" is one of those books that can only be self-published because it defies way too many conventions to get trad-pubbed.
Yes, the backstory is utterly, viscerally horrifying. But the actual story is gentle, undramatic, and extremely conflict-light. The protagonists research their problems and communicate openly throughout the book, in exactly the way romance protagonists basically never do.
