OK, let's explore what the pre-integrated skin shader actually does.

Here's a temporary nude base model with (0,0,0) base color and (1,1,1) subsurface color. As you can see, it's very bright. Images are at different opacities (0,0.1,0.5,1)

Note that even at full "opacity", this character is not inky black like the base color recommends. Subsurface injects an enormous, absolutely enormous amount of light into the character model.

White is a silly subsurf color, but shows well.
