Thinking a bit more, I suppose a more likely explanation is that there has been a bug in Windows (presumably relating to page faults) for a long time that no one noticed, and some innocuous update to some innocuous software ended up triggering it. And it just happens that lots of people use the software via an autoupdater and the symptoms of the bug is relatively severe
(But this is all a theory; I know nothing)
