I have a theory (which I haven't tested at all)
My theory is that Windows needs __declspec(dllimport) because it uses different instructions with different pointer sizes when the destination is in the same DLL vs when the destination is in a different DLL. (like PC-relative 8 bytes for other DLLs vs PC-relative 4 bytes for the same DLL)
I bet UNIX doesn't do this because they probably just use 8 bytes everywhere.
(Again, totally untested, just a theory)
