509 years ago today, in 1515, the Habsburg princess Isabella (14) arrived in Denmark from the Low Countries for her wedding to King Christian II (34). At harbour in Helsingör (Elsinore) she wrote to her aunt and foster mother Margaret. Isabella was a pawn in the great game of marriage alliances, and her letter home gives a rare view of how one of these pawns felt about her fate: "Your absence is the worst of everything for me, especially since I can have no hope of seeing you again"
