There was rivalry between English and German merchants in Northern Europe. The English had started sailing into the Baltic themselves, threatening the business of the German ports in the Baltic who traded with England.
English merchants and fishermen were also active in Iceland, which was under the Norwegian crown, which was in turn under the Danish crown - without the Danish/Norwegian kings consent.
In 1467, English merchants killed the king's governor (hirðstjóri) in Iceland. Very untoward!
