The Cyclopteridae, also referred to as Lumpsuckers, are small fish found throughout the Arctic, North Atlantic, and North Pacific oceans. Their genus name comes from the Greek words “kyklos” and “pteryx,” which means “wing” and “fin,” referencing their fins. They have suction cups on their bodies that allow them to anchor themselves to rocks, and the males guard and rear their eggs, which can number anywhere from 200 to 350,000 until they hatch! They do that because females are mainly solitary.
