Well, here's how I would do it if that's what I'm doing.
Encode the steganographic payload packet in something that could be extracted from the image itself and not from the digital representation, which is subject to change without notice when the image is compressed and resized and redisplayed at the whims of the service that will be storing the images. I wouldn't use a QR code specifically, but the idea of one should give you the concept of a visual code that can be deciphered at arbitrary..
