In 1970, just before meeting Nana, Don Cherry put together a job application in order for Dartmouth University to hire him. He submitted five pages, decorated with flowers, featuring the heading, “STUDENT OF LIFE and UNIVERSITY OF LIFE." Jon Appleton, a composer of electronic music and later one of the co-creators of the Synclavier synthesizer, reformatted Don’s vita so that it would be recognizable to the upper administration. Laying bare the awkwardness of translating jazz criteria for establishing authority to the academy, it includes such understated lines as “1960 Private Studies with John Coltrane," "1962 Toured Europe playing with Sonny Rollins," and “1964 Private Studies with Thelonious Monk” alongside “Lived in small village of ‘Sazuka' near Morocco, North Africa," and “1967 Moved to Stockholm and began studying Turkish folk music." One student in the music course Cherry taught at Dartmouth described it as the music equivalent of “a religion course taught by someone present at the Last Supper."
