The boffins still haven't put it together. Insurance underpins property values and lending. Property value is used as collateral for all sorts of lending.
Insurance underpins property value. Insurance underpins lending. Without insurance, property values tank and lending dries up. Any manner of default will pull on the strings of a cascade of foreclosure.
