When I watch Star Trek TOS episodes, I feel an absence of the weight of canon. They didn't have to worry about getting timelines or character backstories or technical references correct because they were defining those things (without caring that they were defining those things). I feel like I'm watching a blank slate which is obvious but jarring and a different kind of enjoyable.
