In August 1798, the French flagship L'Orient exploded at the Battle of the Nile. A thousand men were killed, including Captain, Luc J J Casabianca and his son.
In 1826 Felicia Hemans published the poem that Nancy and Peggy had to recite to their Great Aunt.
Casabianca begins "The boy stood on the burning deck
Whence all but he had fled;
The flame that lit the battle's wreck
Shone round him o'er the dead."
Spike Milligan later rephrased it '“The boy stood on the burning deck - the twit.'
